Women Business Owners Making Their Mark in the 21st Century

November 4th, 2011

The number of firms owned by women has grown by twice the rate of all other firms in the past ten years. Marjorie Alfus, chairperson for Women’s Business Research said, “Women business owners are significant players in the nation’s economy and their momentum shows no signs of slowing down”.

This is further supported by the Center For Women’s Business Research and their projections for 2006 that there would be 10.4 million privately held businesses in the US with women owning over half of these firms. Between the years of 1997 and 2006, the number of firms owned by women increased by up to 42%, which was almost double that of other firms, at around 23%.

The United Kingdom has also had significant growth from women in business. It is calculated that women, in a matter of three months, started 20,500 new businesses in the year 2006, which is around a 30% increase from the same time last year. Clair Logie, who is the director of the Bank of Scotland’s Women in Business Team, commented, “We are definitely seeing a huge uplift, particularly in the US, which we tend to trail here in terms of trends.”

With these staggering facts, it is safe to say that women becoming entrepreneurs is a world wide phenomenon. Home based businesses were the largest number of businesses held by women at around 56%. The Census Bureau’s director Louis Kincannon commented recently that home-based businesses collectively generated a remarkable amount of economic activity, especially for women and minorities.

More women are becoming entrepreneurs because they see the attractiveness that a home-based business has to offer them in terms of freedom and flexible working hours. No longer having to work hours dictated to them, women entrepreneurs have more time to spend with their families and to bring up their children. They enjoy more varied and meaningful tasks in their business, without the limitations and stresses associated with the glass ceiling corporate world.

Technology has definitely been a contributing factor to the development of home-based businesses. Many have been able to work from home following the introduction of computers, internet, cell phones and faxes. “The rapid acceleration of information technology has opened doors for new businesses. It has helped change the way America conducts business today by offering more choices. Many women entrepreneurs have taken advantage of these choices and created home-based businesses that have proven to be more practical, effective and convenient for their lifestyle” says Dick Falcone, AT&T Vice President of Sales for the Small Business Markets.

A Golden Opportunity for Women Business Owners in a $15 Billion Market

November 4th, 2011

The federal, state and local government agencies throughout the United States are looking to do business with women-owned firms like never before. One of the key reasons is that women-owned firms in the U.S. are growing like never before.

The federal government, along with many states and local government agencies, maintain goals regarding the contracts they target for women-owned businesses. The federal government’s goal is 5% of the more than $300 billion in federal contracts which amounts to $15 billion in business opportunities that should be won by women-owned firms. This is both good news and bad news. The bad news is that this goal has never been reached. The good news is that there is a greater opportunity now than ever before for women-owned firms to tackle and win contracts in the government market.

This is a time of golden opportunity because the SBA has finally issued the proposed regulations to implement the formal women’s federal procurement program which was approved as law over five years ago, but never enacted. This important program provides a targeted option to enable federal contracting officers to “set-aside” certain procurements for women-owned businesses. This creates an unprecedented opportunity for qualified women-owned firms to jump-start their government contracting business.

Can women-owned business handle these opportunities? The answer is a resounding yes. A recent report by the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) states that women-owned firms increased nearly 20 percent over the latest period studied. During the five years between 1997 and 2002, women-owned firms grew by 19.8 percent while all U.S. firms grew by seven percent.

The report uses newly released U.S. Census and other data to describe women’s contributions to the economy. Statistics documented in the report include:

* In 2002, women owned 6.5 million or 28.2 percent of nonfarm U.S. firms. More than 14 percent of these women-owned firms were employers, with 7.1 million workers and $173.7 billion in annual payroll.

* According to 2002 data, significant proportions of women-owned businesses were in professional, scientific, and technical services, and in health care and social assistance.

Another fascinating statistic from a different organization, the Center for Women’s Business Research states that:

* Businesses majority-owned by women of color have grown six times faster than all U.S. firms between 1997-2004. The number of firms increased by more than half (55%), number of employees increased by nearly two-thirds (62%), and annual sales revenue increased by almost three quarters (74%).

Firms owned by women have the knowledge and capacity to perform well in the government market. Generally their biggest hurdles are learning how to break into the market and working within government processes, rules and regulations. There are a number of organizations that are poised to help women-business owners tackle this profitable market such as the SBA and the National Women’s Business Council. It is a complicated maze, but one worth tackling!

Big Step For Women Business Owners

November 4th, 2011

Last week I was given the opportunity not only to be a speaker at the Women’s Business Development Conference & Expo, but to experience the event from participants’ point of view as well. I have to say, I was very proud to take part in this event; I was proud to be part of the great effort to advance women in the business world. The women business owners’ conference left us with a message to the professional world that women are here and we mean business. The Women’s Business Development Center, with the help of Office Depot and other corporations, put together a business expo for women business owners, bringing in a great turnout of professional women.

Between meeting exciting, new people, attending my booth, giving a speech, listening to other amazing speakers and even taking part in business match-making sessions, I could barely take in everything that was out there. But as I stopped to take a deep breath and a mental break, I stumbled across a huge realization: This was one of the greatest “wow” moments of my career. I was absolutely inspired by the large and diverse congregation of independent, strong women and even more amazed by the great support we were receiving from executives and top corporations. It felt good, as a woman, to finally receive recognition for women’s collective efforts to make women a part of the foundation of the business world. To think of how much society and popular thought has changed just in my lifetime is a bit unbelievable and yet here I was in a beautiful venue, with the latest and greatest technology and some of the most important corporate figures in South Florida, all brought together with great opportunities to follow up with.
